The Reliability Information Analysis Center (RIAC) is the Department of Defense’s Center of Excellence in reliability engineering. RIAC uses thousands of Subject Matter Experts to solve engineering problems and conducting studies in Reliability, Maintainability, Quality, Interoperability and Supportability (RMQSI). RIAC is lead by Wyle Laboratories and the team includes the University of Maryland, Penn State University, the State University System of New York and Quanterion Solutions. RIAC has been in operation since 1968, has over 150,000 documents on past reliability programs and studies, over 4,000 Subject Matter Experts in RMQSI and a very active training and product development process. The center is currently involved in over 300 research and engineering projects related to reliability improvements throughout the Department of Defense, NASA, FAA, Department of Homeland Security and other governmental agencies. |

Microflown has been supplying the automobile industry with its patented acoustic particle velocity sensor for many years, but the development of the Acoustic Vector Sensor (AVS) for 3-D situational awareness has seen focus shift to battlefield acoustics. Extensive tests show that the Acoustic Vector Sensor’s ability to locate both the direction and elevation of sound sources outstrips all direct competition despite being far smaller (just 5x5x5mm). It is the flexibility and mobility of the technology, as well as the way it detects any acoustic signature from any platform, that is of most appeal to military end-users. Microflown AVISA’s sensors are currently being delivered to the Dutch Army for RAM (Rocket, Artillery & Mortar) detection and localisation, and to a non-NATO country for artillery and gunshot localisation from a UAV platform. Other projects Microflown is working on include helicopter localisation from a mobile SAM launch platform, acoustic situational awareness for light armoured reconnaissance vehicles, and acoustic tracking for border control. The latter includes Microflown’s VAUDEO, which is the combination of acoustic and optronic sensors, used in this instance for remote target detection, localisation and identification in border or perimeter protection scenarios.Other UAV applications in development include acoustic sense & avoid or Acoustic Collision Avoidance System (ACAS), as well as an acoustic landing system for UAVs. |
